The Phos Hilaron, the gladsome light or hilarious (laughter filled) light is a beautiful prayer for evening time.

O gracious light,
pure brightness of the everliving Father in heaven,
O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!
Now as we come to the setting of the sun,
and our eyes behold the vesper light,
we sing your praises, O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
You are worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices,
O Son of God, O Giver of Life,
and to be glorified through all the worlds.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

This morning looking out from our porch, the light in the sky felt gladsome, joyful, exuberant to me. Perhaps, it was the lack of sleep, but that’s what I felt. So, I think we could use a rewrite of this poem and prayer for morning time, especially that wee hour of the morning where the sky isn’t so sure what it wants to do so it changes hues all at once. Out here the temperature drops 5 degrees or more just as the sun tucks up it’s arms and gets to work.

I’d take anyone else’s work, but here’s my attempt:

O gracious light,
pure brightness of the everliving Father in heaven,
O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!
Rising with the son our eyes behold the morning light,
we sing your praises, O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
You are worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices,
O Son of God, O Giver of Life,
and to be glorified through all the worlds.
The light of the Father shield us this day
The light of Christ guide us this day.
The light of the Holy Spirit fill us this day.
Thy light be peace upon us, gracious God three in one,
What you begin in us this day see through to completion.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
