Jumping from the Side

Swim lessons take time and comfort with the water, and for a kid’s Jane’s age, that means playing and having fun in the water.

But she is working on skills even when she doesn’t know it. She loves holding onto daddy’s shoulders while we go underwater after a dive toy, and she loves kicking her feet on her noodle. Today, she started jumping from the side of the pool onto her noodle and then threw the noodle away to jump to mommy and daddy.

Those little push offs and the willingness to throw herself out under the water…. It’s wonderful and adorable, and those happen to be skills that will help her start swimming.

I know the play that teaches theory is always popular, but I really like playing with Jane and Lucy in the water. Watching them smile, and I hope that when it comes down to it, they will let me teach them skills in the water.
